The Media Kit: What Constitutes It?
The media can be a very useful tool when it comes to promoting, advertising, lending credibility, building reputations, etc. But, how does one get the media to notice a particular business? Well, for most companies that want to get noticed by the media, creating a media kit is the best way to attract them. This helps the company get their message across, and the media to understand it as it is meant to be understood.
Depending on the kind of business, a media kit can constitute anything, from a simple press release about the company to an elaborate package that usually contains a CD/DVD with relevant information on the company, with slides and free samples. But, the main aim of the basic media kit is simple. It is to provide the relevant information about the company
The public relations personnel normally use the media kits to promote the company. They also usually include a company calling card with the company contact information on it. The kit usually consists of a basic information sheet introducing and describing the company, with a simple press release shedding light on the latest developments of the company, and any other new information about the company's activities.
The kit may also include a short form of the annual report, and also a sheet of testimonials from clients and customers who have availed of the products and services offered by the company.
All these releases are then carefully packaged and placed in attractive and conservative folders, with the company logos printed in the front, in most of the cases. These folders are then mailed to select media outlets. Some of the most avid senders of such media kits include financial firms and other similar businesses.
Fashion houses or other entertainment companies; however, tend to send more elaborate kits. They may include CD and DVD of their latest offerings, with interviews of the producer or designer, etc. Some of the kits will even come with personalized extras such as perfume samples fabric swatches or music CD. Food companies also often send their own samples as well consisting of their newest eatable in the market. Press releases are also included in this case. So, a media kit can contain a wide variety of products.
These media kits are usually used to inform media about a new company, or to promote a recently launched product of some established company. The kit's assembly and contents depend largely on the purpose for which it is being created.
A good media kit will contain some basic materials which will help your motive behind creating them in the first place. The materials in the kit have to be persuasive with the media in question, and it must support your goal of getting the adequate publicity. Enhancing contents which work, and improving those which does not, can also go a long way in making your media kit effective.
